Meet the 2018-19 Board of Trustees:

We are pleased to present the biographies of our Trustees and Officers for the 2018-19 Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston Board.

Harvey Freishtat – President
Harvey Freishtat is Senior Counsel to and former Chairman/CEO of McDermott Will & Emery, an international law firm with more than 1,000 lawyers. During his 37 year career, Harvey practiced in the area of health care law, representing many of New England's hospitals, health care systems and other providers of care. He is a past President of Schechter (1988-1989) and most recently co-chaired its Generations Campaign to strengthen the school's endowment. He is a Board Member of Massachusetts Eye & Ear and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center as well as a founding Board Member of The Conversation Project. Harvey is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School. He and his wife Brenda live in Brookline and have three children all of whom are Schechter graduates.

Frederic Leif – Finance Chair
Frederic Leif is a Managing Director and the Chief Financial Officer of Abrams Capital, a Boston-based investment firm founded in 1999. Fred joined Abrams Capital in 2010 when he and his family moved from Stamford, CT to Newton, MA. Prior to joining Abrams Capital, Frederic was Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at DKR Capital, a global multi-strategy alternative investment firm where he worked for more than 10 years. Mr. Leif graduated from SUNY Binghamton with a B.S. in Accounting. Fred and his wife Lori have three children Rebecca '17; Ryan, grade 5; and Ruby, grade 5.

Ellis V. Morris – Development Chair
Ellis Morris is a CPA and founding partner of Morris & Morris, P.C., consisting of 30 professionals, where he continues to actively manage the firm and provide a wide range of professional services to a full complement of business and individual clients. He began his professional career with a seven-year tenure at a "big 8" CPA firm in New York and Boston. Prior to starting Morris & Morris, P.C., Ellis was the CFO for a $30 million multi-entity company. Currently, Ellis is the Vice President of Finance of Temple Israel of Natick and has held several other executive board positions over the past eight years. Ellis is a newly-elected member of the Board of Trustees of Gann Academy. Five years ago, Ellis was named the first recipient of the MetroWest Jewish Day School's Keter Shem Tov Award (the Crown of a Good Name). Three years ago, Ellis, a former Board Member of JFS, and his wife Barbara were honorees at the Jewish Family Service of Metrowest "Seize the Dream" Gala.  Ellis was Co-Chair of the 2015-2016 Schechter Annual Campaign. Ellis graduated from the University of Scranton with a B.S. in Accounting. He and his wife Barbara have one child, Ashley '17, who is now in her second year at Gann Academy.

Danielle Remis Hackel – Committee on Trustees Chair
Danielle Remis Hackel is a managing director of State Street Global Advisors (SSGA), the investment management division of State Street Bank and Trust. Danielle works in the institutional client group of SSGA, having been at the firm for 13 years in various areas of product and marketing. Prior to joining SSGA, Danielle worked for Deutsche Bank in New York and in London. Danielle holds a B.A. from Barnard College of Columbia University and an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School. Danielle is a trustee of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She lives with her husband Michael and children, Rose, grade 6 and Harris, grade 4.

Esty Lobovits '90 – Clerk and Communications Liaison
Esty R. Lobovits previously served as Schechter's alumni fundraising co-chair from 2011-2013. Esty is a corporate litigator (mostly in healthcare cases) at Skadden Arps and lives in Cambridge. She previously worked as a corporate litigator at Kirkland & Ellis in New York. Her mother, Lisa Rosenfeld, is an attorney and works at the Massachusetts State House at the Committee on Children and Families. In addition to being a past president of Schechter and Gann Academy, Esty's father, Alan Lobovits, is a pediatrician and the president of Southboro Medical Group. While practicing as an attorney, Esty has always been committed to pro bono work, helping to secure legal immigration status for victims of domestic violence and juveniles who traveled to the US unaccompanied from Latin America. She attended Emory Law School in Atlanta and graduated in 2007. Prior to her graduation from Emory, Esty had a career in New York in public relations/business communications and graduated from Barnard College with a degree in English literature in 1998. Esty has two siblings who are also graduates of Schechter: Ellie '94 and Ethan '97. Esty lives in Cambridge with her husband, Erik Sabot.

Rabbi Daniel Berman
Daniel Berman is the Rabbi at Temple Reyim in Auburndale, Newton, a traditional egalitarian synagogue affiliated with the Conservative Movement. He previously served as Assistant Rabbi at Congregation Mishkan Tefila and as a faculty member at the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College. Prior to his rabbinic training, Daniel was a trial attorney at Mintz Levin in Boston, specializing in securities law while also representing individuals seeking asylum. He received his B.A. from Columbia University in Jewish and American History, his J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law and his rabbinic ordination from the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College. His wife Sarah is a strategic business consultant. They have two children, Elie age 15; and Mica, age 12.

Roger Klein - Investment Chair
Roger Klein is an investor, focusing primarily on commercial real estate and companies. He serves on other nonprofit boards, including the regional Board of the American Technion Society. In the past, he was an adjunct and visiting law professor and head of the legal department at a publicly traded company. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, he lives in Newton with his wife, Rachel Coben, and his sons Noah, grade 5 and Ari, grade 3.

Jerald Korn
Jerald Korn is the Chief Compliance Officer and lead commercial and healthcare regulatory attorney at TESARO, an oncology-focused biopharmaceutical company. Jerald has worked at several small to mid-size biotech companies since beginning his career in private practice, representing primarily healthcare clients on a range of topics, including non-profit governance. Jerald has been active on the Committee for Trustees (Governance and Nominating) since 2012, having helped to revise the Schechter bylaws. He graduated from Harvard University and Boston University School of Law. Jerald and his wife, Lauren, live in Newton with their three children Seth, grade 6; Justin, grade 3; and Ezra, grade 1.

Joshua Margolis '80 - Head of School Support and Evaluation Chair
Joshua Margolis attended Solomon Schechter Day School and is a parent of a current fifth grader at the school. Joshua, his wife Sara Schutzman, and their daughter Yael live in Brookline, where they are members of Congregation Kehillath Israel. Joshua is a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School. His research and teaching focus on leadership, ethics, and organizational behavior, and he is the faculty chair of the HBS Christensen Center for Teaching and Learning.

Amanda Redler-Schouela - Parent Association Co-Chair
Amanda Redler-Schouela is the Schechter Parent Association Co-Chair. Amanda is a speech therapist and graduated from Emerson College in 2002 with a Master's Degree in Speech Therapy. Prior to that, Amanda received a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Concordia University in Montreal. After graduating from Emerson College she worked in Early Intervention for five years and then moved to work at OAT The Koomar Center, where she started and helped grow their speech therapy program. Amanda and her husband, Adam, live in Newton with their three children Chloe, grade 4; Elizabeth, grade 2: and Alexa, age 3.

Sandy Remz
Sandy Remz is an attorney and the managing shareholder of Yurko, Salvesen & Remz, P.C., a business litigation boutique law firm located in Boston’s financial district. He has spent his career in private law practice, having previously been a partner at other major Boston law firms. Sandy currently serves on the Generations Campaign Committee. Sandy’s involvement in the community includes: current president of the board of Yad Chessed; former long-term board member of Camp Ramah in New England, where he was president from 2004 to 2008; former member of CJP Commission on Caring and Social Justice; and a former board member and co-chair of Executive Director Search Committee for Hillel at Brandeis. Sandy’s wife, Arlene Remz, who once served as President of the Schechter Board, is currently the executive director of Gateways: Access to Jewish Education. Both are members of the Newton Centre Minyan. Their three children are graduates of Schechter: Tamar '99 of New York is the Chief Partnership Officer for the Grinspoon Foundation; Adina ’01 is the former executive director of the Jewish Disaster Response Corps, made Aliyah to Tel Aviv in 2015 and married Josh Tenby there in August 2016; and Jonah ’05 who is now working in New York as an analyst for the investment bank of Houlihan Lokey.

Chen Schor
Chen is the Co-Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of resTORbio. Chen has vast experience leading biotech companies across all stages, from formation, building a team and early stage discovery to a publicly traded multi-product company with significant big pharma partnerships. Chen served as Vice President, Global Branded Business Development and Pipeline Management at Teva Pharmaceuticals and at leadership positions at several emerging private and public companies. He was a Partner at Yozma Venture Capital where he led the foundation and growth of multiple therapeutic companies from inception to significant commercial successes. Chen led strategic transactions valued at over $8 billion with companies such as GSK, Amgen, Pfizer, Merck KGaA (co-led) and Cephalon (co-led). He holds a Master's in Business Administration, a B.A. in Biology, a B.A. in Economics and is a Certified Public Accountant. Chen and his wife, Iris, live in Needham with their three children Gili '14; Yoni '17; and Maya, grade 5.

Ari Sussman '92
Ari Sussman graduated Schechter in 1992 and has been serving on the board for the past eight years. Ari and his wife Jessica '96, live in Boston with sons Eli and Max, grade 1. Ari currently serves as Chief Product Officer at RateGravity, a Boston startup focuesd on saving people tens of thousands of dollars on their mortgage. He graduated from McGill University and Harvard Business School.

Christopher Wyett

Bil Zarch
Bil Zarch is the Director of Camp Yavneh.  Prior to this, Bil was Head of School at Krieger Schechter Day School in Baltimore and Lander-Grinspoon Academy in Northampton. Bil was an active professional in the Boston community as the Director of the High School at Prozdor and oversaw the period of growth from 150 to 900 students. Being back at Yavneh, he comes full circle as he spent seven summers on staff, including holding a number of leadership roles. Bil earned his bachelor’s degree in public communications from SUNY Buffalo, a master's degree in Jewish education from Hebrew College in Boston, and is a fellow and graduate of the Day School Leadership Training Institute (DSLTI.) Bil has been an active member of the Jewish community having sat on a number of committees, boards and task forces including co-chairing the Rabbinic search at the Jewish Community of Amherst. He has been the recipient of an award for Exemplary Jewish Community Leadership from the Jewish Federation of Western Massachusetts. Bil is married to Rebecca Peterfreund Zarch. They have two children: Raviv, grade 3; and Danya, grade 1.
